THINGS TO DO
Heath House is an excellent base for business guests: 1.5 miles to Godalming, 5.5 miles to Guildford and 3.6 miles to the A3 with easy access to the M25, London and the south coast. Equally, Heath House is the perfect place for visitors just seeking a relaxing break. There is so much to see and to do in and around Godalming .... Shoppers will find no shortage of temptations offered in Godalming and Guildford, while amateurs of art and antiques will discover important markets in nearby Dorking and Petworth. Cultural and outdoor pursuits are well served in this part of Surrey. Picturesque town centres and local history museums, important National Trust and Historic Houses Association properties within easy reach, all welcome the visitor to Godalming. Godalming – including the nearby locality of Munstead – is also the scene of the convergent genius of Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwin Lutyens which in the years around 1900 created the ideal of the English small country house and garden. |
The extraordinary natural beauty of Godalming and its surroundings is owed to another convergence. Firstly, it is situated at the historic head of navigation of the Wey Valley between. Godalming and Guildford, described by William Cobbett in his early 19th century Rural Rides as the 'prettiest four miles in all England'. Then, the Wey Valley bisects the glorious North Downs and gives access south to the Surrey's last heathland wilderness. Surrounding us are the Surrey Hills, one of the earliest designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Godalming lies at the heart of this richly varied natural landscape of woodland and heathland, hills and meadows, rivers, streams, lakes and ponds, with wildlife in abundance. The proximity of the North Downs Way National Trail and the Greensand Way is an indication that in southern England there is no better area for walkers and naturalists. .... and all this within an hour of Central London! |
